Description
9 South Street in Bo'ness is an early 19th-century small tenement building that was restored in 1981 by William A Cadell Architects. It is three stories high and has three bays, featuring a shop on the ground floor, and is part of an irregular terrace. The ground floor is finished in polished ashlar, while the first and second floors are made of stugged and squared rubble with raised ashlar margins and quoin strips. The rear of the building is harled. It has a deep base, as well as band and eaves courses.
The south elevation is symmetrical, with a central two-leaf panelled timber door and a three-part fanlight above it on the ground floor. There are windows in the flanking bays and regular fenestration on each floor above.
On the north elevation facing North Street, the central bay features a full-height conical-roofed circular stair tower, which has two windows and a door on the left side. There is a window to the left on each floor and an opening to the ground with windows above on the right side.
The building has 9- and 12-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows. The north side has modern pantiles with a slate easing course at the eaves. Coped ashlar stacks with polished quoins, a full complement of cans, and ashlar-coped skews complete the structure.
