Description
11 South Street in Bo'Ness is a two-storey and attic building designed by Matthew Steele in 1907, with alterations made in 1979 by William A Cadell Architects following Steele's design. This single bay shop with residential flats above is built in the Edwardian Free Style, featuring polished ashlar and harl with ashlar dressings, and harl with stone cills at the rear. The ground floor has a cornice and a broad segmental arch with voussoirs, which is infilled with a decorative part-glazed timber door that has a multi-pane fanlight above it, flanked by fixed display windows set on a tiled base, all topped by a larger multi-pane fanlight.
On the north elevation, there is a boarded timber door located to the left of center at ground level, with a small window immediately to the left and a tall tripartite window to the right. Additional tripartite windows are present on the first floor and in the flat-roofed dormer above, along with a small modern rooflight near the ridge on the left side.
The upper sashes of the windows are multi-pane, while the lower sashes are plate glass, all set in timber sash and case frames. The building features modern pantiles installed in 1979, a cavetto-coped harled stack with cans, and a roof that sweeps to create broad overhanging eaves, which flank the attic window on the south side.
