Public Library, Main Street, Renton

The public library on Main Street in Renton was built in 1887. It is a two-storey building with a rectangular plan and three bays, constructed from red sandstone ashlar. The design features a deep base course, a string course, advanced eaves, and a blocking course.

On the main elevation, there is a segmental-headed door at the center, which is a four-panelled door with a fanlight above and a narrow window above that. To the left, there is a full-height square bay that projects outward, containing tripartite windows. The outer right bay has bipartite windows. A band course divides the floors and is inscribed with "Victoria Institute 1887."

The north and south elevations are made of red sandstone rubble and consist of five bays. There are three closely grouped windows in the outer left and right bays, with ashlar cills.

The windows are plate glass timber sash and case, and the roof is a grey slate piended design.

The interior was not seen in 1995.

The boundary wall features a low ashlar plinth wall with plain cast-iron railings and slender cast-iron gate posts.
