Description

The Gorbals Public Library, located at 45 South Portland Street in Glasgow, was built around 1930 by the Office of Public Works. This former library is a two-storey building with a basement and features a near square plan with a classical design. The principal elevations are made of coursed red sandstone ashlar, while the other elevations are constructed of red brick. The building has a round-arched entrance, an eaves cornice, and a parapet. The openings are set in recesses, and the bays are predominantly highlighted by stylised pilasters, with bays 1 to 4 and 10 to 14 being advanced.

On the southwest principal elevation, which is at the corner of South Portland Street and Norfolk Street, there is a near-central single bay with steps leading down to the basement. The wide entrance features a semicircular fanlight above it, set within a round-arched doorpiece. Above the entrance, there are bipartite windows on the first and second floors, flanked by two 4-storey sections on either side. To the left, there is a 4-bay section, and to the right, a 5-bay section.

The east elevation includes a 2-storey and basement 5-bay section on the left, an advanced blank section, and a 5-storey single bay section on the far right. The building has modern glazing and a slightly pitched metal roof.

Inside, the library has been altered, but the original staircase with its metal railing remains intact.
