Description

17 and 19 High Street is an earlier 19th-century building with later 19th-century additions. It is a two-storey and attic, three-bay, symmetrical L-plan town house and shops, with shopfronts that were enlarged around 1890. The principal elevation is constructed of coursed snecked ashlar with smooth surrounds, while the side lane features cement render and the rear is built of whinstone rubble.

The central door has a painted corniced doorpiece and is flanked by handed plate glass shop fronts that have angled corniced fascias and decorative thistle and flower motif end brackets. The left shopfront features a mosaic platt inscribed 'Maypole Dairy' with a buttercup design, and 'MDC' is carved into the lower corner and bespoke brass door handle. The building also has timber polygonal piended dormers. A 20th-century brick extension is located at the rear right.

The windows are 4-pane timber sash and case, and the central door is a 4-panelled design with a fanlight. The shopfronts have glazed doors with fanlights, and there are cast-iron rooflights. The roof is pitched and covered with slate, and cast-iron rainwater goods are present.

Inside, the former dairy on the left has been converted into offices in 2006, but retains marble window shelving and a geometric patterned tiled floor. The butcher shop on the right still has tiling and high-level timber shelving with meat hanging hooks. A turned timber stair leads to the first-floor accommodation at the rear yard.
