Description
The Former Salvation Army Citadel, located at 1 Overhaugh Street, is a late 19th-century building that consists of a two-storey, two-bay block facing the street, featuring upper breaking eaves, and a single-storey hall at the rear. It is currently used for commercial purposes. The building is notable for its prominent round-headed dormers adorned with raised plaques and is constructed from squared red sandstone with ashlar dressings.
On the front elevation facing Overhaugh Street, there is a ground floor shopfront on the right and the former entrance to the hall on the left, which includes bipartite transom windows. The windows are timber sash and case, with multi-pane sections above plate glass. The shop window is made of plate glass, and there are timber rooflights over the hall. The front block has a purple slate roof with an octagonal ventilator, while the hall's roof is not visible. The building features cast iron rainwater goods with decorative hoppers.
Inside, the original layout of the building has mostly been preserved, although some subdivision has occurred. Notable interior features include glazed timber doors, a timber stair, and simple cornices. The boarded hall is open to a collar-truss roof.
