Description

5 Bank Street is an earlier 19th century building with later additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay, corner-sited former townhouse and shops, which is attached to a taller two-storey, two-bay commercial building from the later 19th century that has been converted to offices. This forms an L-plan with a back court to the rear. The townhouse features a central doorway flanked by mid-20th century glazed and rendered shopfronts. The exterior is constructed of random rubble whinstone with painted irregular droved quoins and margins, while the later building has painted coursed stugged sandstone with lugged architraved surrounds. The rear court is made of rubble whinstone and brick.

The main elevations have timber sash and case windows, predominantly with barred 12-pane designs on the side and rear. There are 20th century timber doors. The roofs are piended and pitched slate, featuring cast-iron rooflights, zinc ridges, shouldered brick wallhead stacks, cast-iron rainwater goods, and a wrought iron finial.

Inside, the building was converted to offices in the late 20th century, but some decorative details remain on the first floor. These include timber panelled shutters and panelling, cast iron fire grates with timber surrounds, and a curved timber stair leading to the floored attic space.
