Description
The Royal Bank of Scotland, located at 20-26 George Street in Oban, is a mid-19th century building that underwent early 20th century refronting at the ground level. This three-bay, three-storey bank building features a plain classical design and is symmetrical in appearance. The ground floor is finished in polished grey granite, while the upper floors are constructed of sandstone ashlar.
The facade includes subtle detailing, such as a black base course and three closely spaced central windows, which are connected to a frieze by pilasters. The outer bays contain flanking doors with shouldered architraves and keystones, along with a fascia band. A string course runs at the cill level of the first floor, with cornices at the second floor and eaves. Above, there is a balustrade featuring turned balusters and panelled dies, terminating at the northern end. The facade is framed by strip pilasters, with granite on the ground floor and sandstone ashlar above. The pilaster at the southern end is shared with the neighboring building. The windows on the first and second floors are architraved and shouldered on the first floor.
The rear elevation is a four-bay cement-rendered structure, which includes intermediate height stair windows in the second bay and gabled dormerheads at the second floor that break the eaves. A large modern single-storey addition is present at the ground floor.
The principal elevation features plate glass timber sash and case windows on the first and second floors, while modern glazing and doors are found at the ground floor. The rear has nine and twelve-pane timber sash and case windows. Behind the street frontage balustrade, there is a platform roof, with a grey slated roof pitch and dormers at the rear.
