Description

5, 7, 9, and 11 Stevenson Street is a mid 19th century, four-storey, six-bay plain classical tenement with a rectangular plan. The street elevation is symmetrical and constructed of sandstone ashlar, featuring shopfronts. The east end and rear elevations are made of coursed rubble with sandstone dressings. Notable architectural details include a moulded base course, a cornice above the shopfronts, and a string course at the second-floor cill level. The eaves are finished with a cornice that is interrupted around a downpipe at the west end. The shopfront door and window openings have roll moulded surrounds, while the first-floor window openings are corniced with aprons and have moulded cills over spandrel panels. The second-floor windows are architraved and corniced, and the third-floor windows are architraved with bracketed cills.

The rear (north) elevation features a symmetrical seven-bay design, but a large, flat-roofed modern extension obscures the first and second floors. At the center, there is a broad chimneyhead gabled bay and a semicircular brick stair tower with a conical roof, flanked by narrow windows on each floor. Surviving plate glass timber sash and case windows can be found at the first-floor east flat and the third-floor west flat. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a shallow pitch. There are multiple-flued stacks at the east and rear gables, as well as at the center of the ridge. Additionally, there is a 15-flue ashlar stack at the west end, which is situated over a shared structural wall with the neighboring building at number 3.
