Description
The Angus Steak House, located at 17 and 19 Swan Street in Brechin, is a former bank building dating from 1863, designed by Peddie and Kinnear. It features a mix of early Italian and Jacobethan architectural styles. The building is three stories tall with a square plan and is set back from the street within a railed area.
The second-floor windows have ball-finialled dormer heads in a piended slated roof, which is accented by a bracketed rhone cornice. The exterior is constructed of snecked rubble with ashlar dressings at the recessed angles. The elevation facing Swan Street has three windows, a central door topped with a bracketed cornice, and two bipartite windows with stilted lintels. These windows have column mullions with sculptured capitals, and similar bipartites are found in the outer bays of the first floor. All other openings are shouldered and stop-chamfered.
On the Clerk Street elevation, there are three windows, with the central window located in a wallhead chimney gablet. There is a later two-storey back wing projection that extends out to the pavement, featuring a two-window elevation, one of which is a bipartite. This section has a piended roof at the south angle, a cornice, and a deep plain parapet. The west elevation has a single window centered beneath a wallhead chimney, with a balconied window on the first floor. Additionally, there is a single-storey pebble-dashed rear addition at right angles, which includes a porch with a cornice and a deep plain parapet in the angle.
