Description
1, 3 Swan Street in Brechin is a mid-Victorian free Renaissance building featuring a three-storey ashlar corner block with a splayed angle. The building has string courses at the first and second floors, with a guilloche band course below the second floor. The elevation facing Swan Street includes a shop door at number 3, two windows, and a corner with a door from number 1 that has been converted into a window. Above this, there is a three-window elevation, with a splayed corner featuring a single window set in plain pilasters and a balustraded balcony on console brackets at the first floor.
On the Market Street elevation, both shops have a door and two windows, with five windows on the first floor and four on the second floor above. The windows are varied but symmetrically arranged, featuring segment-headed and stop-chamfered outer windows on the first and second floors of Swan Street, as well as the centre and outer windows on the first floor of Market Street and the second floor of the corner bay. The first-floor corner bay has a shouldered rosette type with a consoled cornice, and the main cornice is topped with a plain panelled parapet between single flue chimneys that have original square-plan panelled pots. There is a central wallhead chimney gable facing Market Street, and the roof is slated. The upper part of the shop front on Swan Street has been overlaid by modern paccia.
