Royal Bank Of Scotland, 47-49 High Street, Lockerbie

The Royal Bank of Scotland, located at 47-49 High Street in Lockerbie, was designed by Peddie and Kinnear and completed in 1867, as indicated by its monogram and date. This two-storey bank features stugged red ashlar with polished dressings and architraves. The main elevation facing High Street has three bays, with two outer doors (the left one now blocked) that have consoled hoods. The large central opening has been altered but still retains its architrave. The first-floor windows are arranged in a 1-3-1 pattern and are fitted with plate glass sashes. Notable architectural details include a decorative twisted cast-iron rainwater pipe, an iron-bracketted gutter, and dormers with curved segmental roofs. The building has a deep plan, with the south gable constructed of narrow-coursed rubble and featuring a pair of coped end stacks, all topped with a slate roof.
