Description

The Royal Bank of Scotland, designed by Peddie and Kinnear and dated 1871, is a two-storey, five-bay bank building featuring classical detailing, with flatted dwellings above. It is situated on a terrace that descends to the southeast. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar with droved margins and stugged quoins, and includes raised base and cill courses as well as an eaves cornice. The ground floor windows have scrolled aprons, while the first-floor windows are bracketed and have architraved surrounds.

On the northeast (principal) elevation, there is a moulded doorcase with steps leading to a deep-set folding panelled timber door, which features a heraldic emblem in the etched fanlight above. Flanking windows include one on the outer right with a cash machine, and there is regular fenestration on the first floor. Relief-carved stone near the eaves on the left is dated '1871', with a similar stone on the right marked 'PK'. Three small modern rooflights are positioned above.

The northwest (The Croft) elevation has angled bays on the left with two windows on each floor and an additional window in the attic, flanked by stacks. The right side features a variety of elements, including slightly lower single-storey bays and a corniced doorway with a panelled timber door to the left.

The southwest (rear) elevation has a single and a two-storey wing projecting on the left, with a set-back face that includes a nepus gable at the centre and a semicircular-headed dormer window to the right.

The southeast elevation has a lower building adjoining below the gablehead, which features paired broad stacks. The first-floor windows are replacement timber sash and case with plate glass glazing, while the ground floor has modern hardwood windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks with polygonal cans, ashlar-coped skews with some moulded skewputts, and a cast-iron downpipe with a decorative rainwater hopper and stone fixings.

Inside, there is a screen door with etched glass, and the modernised banking hall retains timber doors, a counter, and dado panelling.
