Description

14 Wellmeadow in Blairgowrie is a former bank building constructed between 1937 and 1939, designed in the Art Deco style. It is a two-storey structure with a basement, featuring three bays and located on a corner site within an irregular terrace. The exterior is made of ashlar stone, some of which is channelled, and reinforced concrete. Notable architectural elements include a deep marble base course, band and first-floor cill courses, an eaves cornice, and a parapet.

The principal elevation on the southwest side is symmetrical, with the central bay at ground level showcasing a broad fixed display window. The flanking bays each have a marble-margined doorway, leading up to a deep-set two-leaf part-glazed timber door topped with a deep plate glass fanlight. Above this, a band course leads to the centre bay, which features a stone balustrade and a set-back bay with two windows. The flanking bays also have additional windows. A projecting cornice with animal masks adorns the outer bays, while the parapet includes decorative ironwork balustrades for the set-back centre bay, which also has a flag pole and a second Empire roof behind.

The southeast elevation, facing Mill Street, features a single bay with a canted design, as the ground falls to the east. It has a deep base course that meets the cill of a ground floor window, with another window positioned above it.

The northwest elevation projects from the neighbouring terraced building and includes a door in the re-entrant angle at ground level, along with a single window on the first floor.

The first floor features plate glass glazing in margined Crittal windows, while the ground floor has a two-pane horizontal glazing pattern in a metal window. The roof is covered with grey slates.

Inside, the building retains some original features, including moulded cornices (though these are obscured by a lowered ceiling in the former banking hall), some marble flooring, and a concrete staircase.
