Description

Dated 1890. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay (above ground) flatted dwelling with shops at ground, in irregular terrace on ground falling to SE. Squared rubble with ashlar margins. Ground floor cornice and frieze, eaves course. Architraved windows and stone mullions.

SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: traditional shop front to left of centre at ground, comprising deep-set 2-leaf part-glazed timber door and deep plate glass fanlight etched with 'Jas Crockart & Son/EST 1852' to centre, flanking narrow piers giving way to vertically-astragalled 2-part fixed display windows and outer piers; timber door immediately to right of centre with fixed display window and in-canted door beyond. 3 bipartite windows to 1st floor, timpany gable bearing relief carved panel with 'JS' and '1890' to centre above and timber-pedimented dormer windows over outer bays.

Out-of-character glazing. Grey slates. Shouldered, coped ashlar stack with can and ashlar-coped skews.

INTERIOR: No28 (Jas Crockart) with fine interior in place including boarded timber walls and moulded cornices (see Notes). No 30 with pend entrance leading to curved staircase with decorative cast-iron balusters and timber handrail.
