Description
Marlborough Hall is a large stone classical building from the mid to late 19th century, located on Crossley Street. It is two storeys high and features five windows. The ground storey has rusticated piers that support an entablature, which has been painted and partly altered for a shop. The first floor is distinguished by a row of engaged Corinthian columns in antis, with a modeled entablature and blocking. The round-arched windows on this level have enriched tympana, and there is a central balcony.
Inside, the first-floor hall showcases Corinthian pilasters, enriched round-arched windows, and a coffered segmental ceiling. At the street end, there is a broad gallery supported by a pair of Corinthian columns, complete with a decorative balustrade.
Marlborough Hall is part of an important group of listed buildings on Crossley Street, which includes No 2 Wade Street, Nos 12, 18 to 22 (even), and Nos 17 to 33 (odd) Northgate, as well as No 1 (with the south extension of the White Swan Hotel), the White Swan Hotel, and the Princess Buildings on Princess Street, along with No 2 Crown Street. Additionally, these listed buildings form a group with the offices of the Borough Engineer located in the rear premises of Town Hall Street East.
