Description

The George Hotel, located at 235-245 Buchanan Street in Glasgow, was designed by Neil Duff in 1907 and showcases a free classical style. The building stands four storeys tall with an attic and features three main tripartite bays arranged in a 1-1-1 configuration, highlighted by a central recessed, bowed bay. The exterior is constructed of ashlar stone, with a channelled design at the first floor.

The ground floor is adorned with Roman Ionic pilasters and includes a central entrance with a columned doorpiece topped by a broken segmental pediment and a later canopy. To the left of the entrance, there is a carved timber frieze and pediment flanked by timber anta columns.

The first floor windows are fitted with upper leaded T-pane lights and pilaster mullions, complemented by a cornice. The second floor features a cill band, with anta mullioned and segmentally pedimented outer bays, as well as three central segmentally pedimented windows. The third floor windows have a bracketted cill band.

The building is finished with a plain frieze, a dentil band, and a pierced parapet. The dormers are architraved and pedimented, with one in the outer bays and two in the centre. The roofs over the outer bays are pavilion slate, while the centre has a semi-circular hipped roof. There are end and central stacks.

Inside, the hotel includes an elliptically arcaded vestibule screen and a corniced coffered entrance hall.
