Description

Castle Chambers, located at 26 Castle Street in Dundee, is an early 19th-century commercial building that stands three stories tall and features three bays with classical detailing. The exterior is constructed from sandstone ashlar, with a rusticated ground floor and stugged finishes on the first and second floors, complemented by polished dressings and a slate roof. The building has a base course and a band course at the first and second floors, topped with a corniced and coped parapet that includes dies. The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case style, with moulded architraves on the upper floors and corniced aprons at the first floor.

The front elevation showcases a panelled door at the center, framed by a recessed Doric-piered doorcase and a large round-headed fanlight with astragals. There are three windows on both the first and second floors.

Inside, there is a stone stair with cast-iron railings, which were altered at the ground floor in 1967. The inner hall at the rear features an ornate panelled plaster ceiling and two fluted Ionic columns made from pine-clad cast iron. The interior also retains original doors, concealed chimneypieces, ornamental cornices, and some ceiling roses.
