Description

This building, located at 2, 3, and 4 North Charlotte Street in Edinburgh, dates back to around 1790 and is a three-storey structure with a basement and attic, featuring nine bays in a classical style. It is constructed from broached cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. The ground floor exhibits V-jointed rustication, while there is a cill course at the first floor and an eaves cornice. The ground and first floors slightly step up towards the right of the central bay, which has a recessed downpipe at this junction. The central bay, which originally had a common stair door, is now blocked and converted into a window, with the steps removed.

The third bay from the right features a tripartite arched doorpiece with a radiating metal fanlight, while the fourth bay from the left has a pilastered corniced tripartite doorpiece with a fluted frieze and a panelled door. The right block includes small iron balconies on the second floor and a pair of piend-roofed canted dormers, while the left block also has a pair of piend-roofed dormers.

The rear elevation is made of coursed rubble and includes Venetian windows at ground level, along with closet towers. The building has timber sash and case 12-pane windows, ashlar coped skews, coped stone stacks, and is topped with grey slates.

The interior was not seen in 1995. Additionally, there are cast-iron spearhead railings and wrought-iron lamp standards at No 2.
