21 Young Street, Edinburgh

21 Young Street in Edinburgh is a former house built by John Young shortly after 1779, with a later addition of a third storey. This symmetrical, three-storey, five-bay classical building is located on a corner site and is constructed from broadly droved cream sandstone ashlar, featuring polished dressings on the second floor. The exterior includes long and short rusticated quoins, a base course, and a panelled band course above the ground floor, topped with a cornice above the first floor. The central bay features an arched doorpiece with a decorative radiating timber fanlight. To the left, there is a single-storey, single-bay section set back, which has a basement area.

The gable is made of coursed rubble, while the rear elevation is a full original rubble construction with three storeys and three bays, connected to a low two-storey mews block that has been converted into garages.

The building has timber sash and case plate glass windows, ashlar coped skews, and rebuilt rendered stacks. The interior, which was not seen in 1995, includes a fluted pilastered sideboard recess in the former Dining Room, located in the southeast room on the ground floor.
