Description
16 Young Street in Edinburgh is a classical former house built by John Young shortly after 1779. The building features two storeys, a half-sunk basement, and an attic, with a three-bay facade made of droved cream sandstone ashlar and polished dressings. It has an eaves cornice and a central bay that includes an architraved corniced doorpiece, which leads to a deeply set door and fanlight, although the wrought-iron lamp bracket is damaged. The left bay has tripartite windows, while the right bay has an enlarged window at ground level. There are also two small piend-roofed dormers.
The rear elevation is constructed of coursed rubble and has four bays, with a projecting two-storey tower on the left bay and a slightly recessed right bay. A stair window is located at the center of the rear. The building features timber sash and case 12-pane windows, ashlar coped skews, stone stacks, and is topped with grey slates. The interior was not seen in 1995.
