Description

This building, located at 139, 141 George Street and 137, 137A in Edinburgh, dates from around 1790 and has undergone subsequent alterations. It is a three-storey and attic, seven-bay classical tenement with projections at the ground level that incorporate a raised basement. The exterior is finished in droved cream ashlar sandstone with polished dressings, and it formerly featured channelled rustication at the ground level, which still survives at the central bay.

The three left bays have a modern stone-faced shopfront at the ground level, which is connected to the neighbouring shop. The centre bay features steps leading to a common stair door (No 139) with a six-pane fanlight above. The centre right bay has a projecting porch with a pediment, a tripartite doorway, and glazing above, topped with a fanlight that has radiating glazing. There is also an adjoining projecting three-bay shopfront with arcaded glazing, where the centre bay is recessed as an entrance and includes a cornice and a hanging sign. The upper floors are plain with an eaves cornice.

On the right side, there is an earlier 19th-century tripartite box dormer, while the left side features a pair of early 20th-century canted piend-roofed dormers. The windows are timber sash and case, with configurations of 12-pane, 4-pane, and plate glass. The building has ashlar coped mutual skews and rendered stacks, which have been reduced at the centre, topped with grey slates.

Inside, No 139 provides access to a double upper flat to the east and has later slappings that connect to the upper floors above No 141 to the west. The east flat includes an apsidal-ended room in the far two bays and features a panelled dado.
