7 Castle Street, Dundee

7 Castle Street in Dundee is a former Theatre Royal, designed by Samuel Bell between 1808 and 1809. The building features a classical facade that is three stories high and has seven bays, constructed from cream ashlar sandstone with a slate roof. The ground floor has a cornice, and there is a band course at the second floor and at the corniced wallhead. The three central bays are topped with a pediment that includes a bust of Shakespeare in the oculus at the tympanum and a large urn finial. The windows are architraved with corniced lintels, and the central window has a pediment above it. The first floor includes balustraded aprons and a linking cill course, with four-pane timber sash and case frames. The building has corniced stacks with uniform cream cans, and there is an urn on the right skewputt.

The front elevation has modern shopfronts at the ground floor that are not in character with the original design. The three central bays are slightly advanced and pedimented, featuring three windows on both the first and second floors, while the two bays on the left and right also have two windows each on the first and second floors.

Inside, the building has been completely remodelled, but the early stone staircase remains, featuring decorative cast-iron balusters and a ceramic tile dado. In the basement, there are fragments of rock outcrop that are associated with the outcrop upon which the medieval castle of Dundee was built.
