Description

The Corn Exchange Theatre, originally built as a corn exchange, is now used as a theatre and cinema. It was constructed in 1856, as indicated by an inscription on the pediment. The building is made of ashlar Bath stone and features a Welsh slate roof, designed in the Italianate style. It is a single storey with an attic and has a three-bay range. The stone plinth has a moulded top, and there are vermiculated panels at the base of the pilasters to the left and right of the centre, as well as at the base of the rusticated piers on either side. Between the vermiculated panels, there is blind balustrading. The entrance features a six-panel double door with a canted surround and a carved tympanum above. It has a round-topped architrave-surrounded arch, with a keystone that has a mask face. There are paired round-topped sash windows to the left and right of the centre. Corinthian pilasters flank the door, and the rusticated piers on either side have Corinthian capitals. The frieze of the order includes bulls-eye windows with carved keystones. The gable is plain with a pediment and features a rose window that has a central clock. The right side of the building is constructed of red brick and has irregular fenestration. Inside, the theatre is noted for its roof trusses made of cast iron, which were cast by Wilders of Wallingford.
