Description

Wool House is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the mid-17th century and features a late 19th-century front and a rear addition from the same period, with 20th-century alterations to the ground floor. The building is rendered, likely over brick at the plinth, and has late 19th-century light timber framing, probably over earlier timber framing, with lined render infill. The roof is covered with old plain tiles.

The structure is two stories high and has a two-window range. The ground floor has a late 19th-century shop front with a 20th-century glazed door leading to a central recessed porch. On the first floor, there are two-light wood mullion windows on both the left and right sides. Inside, there is a 20th-century staircase leading from the ground floor to the first floor, and a winder staircase from the first floor to the attic. The roof has coupled rafters, likely supported by 17th-century roof trusses and purlins, along with extensive beaming in the first floor and attic.

To the right of Wool House is a former Penny Bank, now part of the shop, which is early 19th-century with 20th-century alterations. It is built of grey brick with red brick dressings and has a hipped roof covered in Welsh slate. This section is also two stories high and has a single-window range. There is a blocked doorway with a 20th-century window to the left, and to the right, there is a tall Venetian window with unhorned sashes featuring Gothick glazing bars and a cambered rubbed brick head.
