Description

This is a theatre, now used as commercial premises, dating to around 1860. It is built of painted stone or stucco and has a balustraded attic. The building is in the Italianate style, with four storeys and four bays. The ground floor has arched windows, and an arched entrance is located in the second bay from the right. Portrait roundels are set within the arches above the ground floor windows. A continuous round-headed arcade runs along the first floor, while the second and third floors feature paired windows set in arched reveals, with portrait roundels positioned between them, including depictions of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Twentieth-century casement windows are present throughout, except on the ground floor to the left, where two bays retain the original arched metal-bar glazing. A modillion cornice is present, and the capitals of the columns exhibit naturalistic foliage at each level. The theatre was originally built as a Shakespearean theatre.
