Description
The Neptune Theatre is a building that dates from the early 20th century and serves as both shops and a theatre. It is constructed from stone and brick and stands five storeys tall, including a mezzanine and attic. The facade features six bays with canted corner bays and five bays facing School Lane. The ground floor has been altered, while the mezzanine showcases small-paned casements set between flat pilasters, topped with an entablature. A round-headed window is present on the first floor, and the three upper storeys are made of brick, adorned with carved capitals on flat pilasters. The attic includes round windows decorated with wreaths, and the building is capped with a rich cornice featuring dentils and modillions.
Inside the theatre, located above a music shop, there is a panelled ceiling and walls that feature fluted Ionic pilasters, modillioned cornices, and busts in wreaths and urns above the doors. The lower parts of the walls are panelled in mahogany and include a Greek key frieze. A balcony is supported by fluted Ionic antae, and there is an open well entrance staircase with turned balusters, accompanied by three orders of columns on the right.
