Description

The Theatre Royal in Lincoln is a theatre built in 1897, which was remodelled and extended around 1930, with later additions from the late 20th century. The building is constructed of brick, featuring ashlar and rendered fronts, with roofs made of slate and asbestos cement.

The exterior is two storeys high. The Clasketgate front includes an angled corner entrance bay on the left, which is rendered and has pilasters and a parapet. Above this entrance is a moulded name panel. To the right, there is a late 19th-century shopfront that serves as the box office, with a 20th-century casement window above it. The left return showcases the original Baroque Revival style ashlar front, which has a cornice supported by scroll brackets and a single pilaster. To the right of this front, there is a round arched doorcase flanked by pilasters and a keystone, with double doors and a fanlight. To the left, there are double doors with a ticket window in the left door, and above, a round window. The right side features later additions of two and three storeys, while the left side has a late 20th-century scene dock with an external stair.

Inside, the auditorium boasts a moulded proscenium arch with Corinthian pilasters on either side, corner brackets, and a single half-round box on each side. There are two cantilevered galleries with curved, moulded plaster panelled fronts. The panelled plaster ceiling includes a cove towards the stage and enriched borders, along with a central pierced boss and chandelier. The interior is significant as a well-preserved example of late 19th-century theatre design and decoration.
