Description

No. 268 on High Street, formerly known as The Cardinal's Hat, is a public house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the late 15th century and was restored in 1952. The building features close-studded timber framing with dressed stone and 20th-century brick underbuild, along with rendered nogging and roofs made of plain tiles and pantiles.

It has two jettied floors, with the upper floor displaying a billeted bressumer, moulded angle shafts, diagonal braces, and coved eaves. The front facing High Street has a central recessed glazed door flanked by single glazing bar windows, all of which are from the 20th century. Above this, there is a continuous range of cusped leaded lights and a central square oriel window with four lights. Further up, there are two projecting leaded windows, each with four lights, and a replica wrought-iron sign bracket.

On the south side, facing Grantham Street, there is a framed gable to the left with a central leaded casement on each floor. To the right, there is a stone rear wing with three bays, featuring 19th and 20th-century windows and a 19th-century doorcase to the right. The interior has not been inspected. This building was originally designed around a courtyard layout.
