Description

The Paget Rooms is a building with a southwest-facing entrance front. It features roughcast render that is painted over a brown glazed brick plinth. The upper storey has a row of seven small-pane casement windows, with a small round window to the left and a parapet above.

The central main entrance has a low round arch flanked by Ionic columns with exaggerated capitals. It includes paired glazed wooden doors with a multi-paned overlight. Above the arch, there is a pair of small-pane casement windows that are flanked by aedicules containing cartouches. The entrance arch is flanked by two taller arches, which have keystones and raised voussoir-like decoration. These arches enclose semi-circular small-pane windows at the first-floor level, while at the ground floor level, each side features shopfronts consisting of a door with an oval window and a two-light corbelled polygonal shop window, complete with multi-pane overlights. To the left of the shopfronts is a small single light loop window, and to the right is a small two-light window. The sides of the building are rendered and have small-pane glazing for service and dressing rooms.

Inside, the vestibule has panelled side walls with oval mirrors, leading to a modernised entrance hall. To the right, stairs lead to a balcony. The auditorium has a broad coved ceiling with two central ventilators that have moulded architraves. Each side of the auditorium features longitudinal ceiling glazing with four lights and moulded architraves. The sides each contain four deep tall round-arched bays, with modern seating in the recesses below theatre boxes that have bulbous balcony fronts, which interconnect to the rear. The balcony at the southwest end is largely modernised, and there is kitchen accommodation overlooking Victoria Road. Above the kitchen is a caretaker's flat. The stage at the northeast end of the auditorium has been modernised, and behind the stage are dressing and service rooms with ledged boarded doors that have long strap hinges. A staircase to the right features balusters with pierced heart-shaped decoration.
