Description

The Palace Theatre is a theatre built in 1913 by Bertie Crewe, with an extension added around the 1960s. It features a brick structure with a plastered front and a slate roof that has a wooden louvre over the auditorium. The original entrance foyer is located on the southwest side, while the 1960s extension, which includes a new foyer, is on the southeast side.

The exterior showcases a three-storey facade with a 2:5:2 bay arrangement. The ground floor is rusticated, featuring a wide central entrance with a moulded architrave and two windows on either side. The first and second floors consist of five bays adorned with panelled giant pilasters that have Ionic capitals and an entablature. The windows are detailed with moulded cornices and cills, and the parapet has had its scrolled centre removed. There are two flanking bays and an additional two bays on the left. The 1960s extension on the right is not considered of special interest.

Inside, the theatre boasts an intact Neo-classical auditorium. The curved circle includes a panelled balcony front that extends into balconies for the boxes, which are supported by pairs of console brackets. The boxes are designed as large aedicules featuring tall fluted pilasters with Ionic capitals, an entablature with a pediment and acroteria, and a frieze with paterae that runs around the auditorium, also incorporating Ionic pilasters. The proscenium arch is reeded and embellished with ribbons, while the frieze above includes a cornice and a small pediment. The ceiling features a moulded cornice and a central lantern light, and the original seats have been re-upholstered.
