Description

2 Plymouth Road is an imposing building of nine bays, dating from the 18th century, with three storeys and a basement, rising to four storeys in the central three bays. It is constructed of grey-brown Pennant stone with Bath stone dressings, which incorporate 16th-century Flemish-style reliefs in the pediments. Half-timbering is present on the second floor. The roof is slate, with some replacements, and features yellow and red brick chimneys and quoins.

The central part of the front elevation has an additional attic storey with prominent, splayed dormers; two flank a three-light dormer window with a shaped pediment. The second floor has a central three-light window, flanked by semi-hexagonal bays. Beyond these are splayed dormers, a narrow gable, and a rectangular end block with a semi-hexagonal bay window under a splayed roof. The first floor mirrors this arrangement, with a central three-light window and broken pediment, flanked by semi-hexagonal bays with segmental pediments.

A central porch provides access via a cambered doorway with panelled double doors and glazing above. The porch is flanked by bay windows with triangular pediments. To the left of the front, a narrower bay with a segmentally headed door is present. To the right of the front are three projecting bays housing a restaurant and hotel, retaining some features similar to the bank front, such as fluted pilasters and a pediment bearing the date 1886.

A single-storey projecting bank front is situated to the right of the main block, constructed of Bath stone and featuring a parapet, six bays articulated by tapering fluted pilasters, and three-centred arches to the windows and doorway, with a pediment above bearing the date 1833. A central inscription reads 'Lansdowne' on a frieze above a fluted Doric colonnade with annulets and a segmental pediment.

The side elevations include projecting gabled bays; a single-storey porch is present on the right elevation, while a similar porch on the left has been demolished. The rear elevation continues the design, with smaller polygonal bays and splayed roofs flanking groups of three windows on each floor. Lower polygonal bays with splayed roofs precede corner blocks set forward, with triangular dormers on the roofs. The left roof has a pyramidal roof at an angle, which is lost on the right.
