Description
This is a substantial nine-bay building, likely dating from the 18th century, constructed of grey-brown Pennant stone with Bath stone dressings. It has three storeys, with four to the central bays, and a basement. The design incorporates Flemish-style reliefs within the pediments and half-timbering on the second floor. The roof is slate, with some replacements, and features yellow and red brick chimneys and quoins.
The central part of the building rises further with an attic storey, distinguished by prominent, splayed dormers, with a three-light dormer featuring a shaped pediment at the centre. The second floor has a central three-light window, flanked by semi-hexagonal bays, beyond which are splayed dormers, a narrow gable, and a rectangular block terminating in a semi-hexagonal bay window with a splayed roof. The first floor follows a similar pattern with a central three-light window and segmental pediments, leading to further bays and a segmentally-headed window on either side.
A central porch provides access, featuring Mannerist fluted Doric pillars with annulets, a parapet, and a segmental pediment displaying the inscription 'Lansdowne' within the frieze. The porch has a cambered entrance doorway and panelled double doors with glazing above. This is flanked by bay windows with triangular pediments; a narrower bay is located to the left of the main front, and a segmentally headed door is present.
To the left of the main section is a single-storey projecting bank front, constructed of Bath stone with a parapet, six bays articulated by tapering fluted pilasters. It has three-centred arches for the windows and doorway, topped with a pediment displaying the date '1833'. To the right of the main block, three ground floor bays form a projecting restaurant and hotel front, retaining some features from the bank front, such as fluted pilasters and a pediment dated 1886.
The side elevations include projecting gabled bays; a single-storey porch originally stood on the right elevation, while it has been demolished on the left. The rear elevation echoes the general treatment, with smaller polygonal bays and splayed roofs flanking groups of three windows on each floor. Lower polygonal bays with splayed roofs precede corner blocks that project forward, and the roofs have triangular dormers. One roof has a pyramidal termination, while another has lost this feature.
