35 Castle Street, Dundee

24 Crichton Street in Dundee is a monumental concert hall designed by James Thomson, with assistance from Vernon Constable, between 1913 and 1922. The interior work was executed by Scott Morton. This impressive rectangular building features a Leipzig-type interior in the main hall and a French Rococo style in the subsidiary Marryat Hall. It also includes an office complex with a former Council Chambers suite that has figurative coloured glass, spanning two additional storeys due to the sloping ground towards Crichton Street, Shore Terrace, and Castle Street.

The facade facing City Square has a Roman Doric colonnade that is 13 bays long, set on a stepped stylobate. The end bays feature panelled square piers, while the inner bays have fluted columns. The frieze is plain, but there is a mutule cornice. The facade includes three central doors in arched recesses with raised channel-jointed surrounds, and similar doors at the ends beyond the colonnade. The building is constructed of polished sandstone ashlar, with roofs that are partly low pitched slate and partly flat.

The Castle Street and Shore Terrace facades are three storeys high, and the Crichton Street elevation is symmetrical with seven bays, plus an additional bay on the left. The western end of the building has been partly overlaid by modern additions, and there are commemorative foundation stones at the southwest corner.

Inside, the Leipzig-type concert hall showcases excellent classical details, fine plasterwork, a flat compartmentalised ceiling, a U-plan gallery, and a large organ case at the stage. The Marryat Hall features elaborate plasterwork in the French Rococo style, with pilasters, square columns, mirrors, and early electroliers. The hall and stairs have terrazzo flooring, along with marble and mahogany panelling and impressive plasterwork. The administrative offices are located at the upper and lower basement levels, with those beneath the Marryat Hall originally serving as the Council Chambers suite, featuring decorative figurative glazing. A low market arcade at the Shore Terrace level has now been incorporated into the offices.
