Description
The Cleland Testimonial Building, located at 1, 3, 5, and 7 Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow, was designed by D and J Hamilton and constructed between 1835 and 1836. This four-storey classical building features an ashlar façade on a corner site, with modern shops occupying the ground floor. The windows are all sash and case, primarily with four-pane glazing set within architraves.
A continuous dentil band at the ground floor serves as a cill band for the first floor, while a moulded cill band is present on the third floor. The building is topped with an eaves cornice and a parapet that is raised in the center and at the outer bays. The corner section is recessed and semi-circular, flanked by giant three-storey pilasters, and includes a wallhead panel with a crested parapet inscribed "The Cleland Testimonial," which is surmounted by a sculpture.
The elevation facing Buchanan Street consists of seven bays arranged in a 1-5-1 pattern, with the central bays projecting forward. The outer bays feature single lights with six-pane vertical glazing, with console cornices at the first floor, consoled block pediments at the second floor, and plain aprons with dropped cills at the third floor. A full-height pilaster is located at the south end.
The Sauchiehall Street elevation has four bays that repeat the design found on the Buchanan Street side. The elevation to East Bath Lane includes three single-light windows and two two-light windows with timber mullions.
