Description

The Western Club, located at 147 Buchanan Street in Glasgow, is an Italianate palazzo style club building designed by D and J Hamilton with the assistance of J T Rochead in 1841. It features three storeys, a basement, and an attic, arranged in a 5 x 5 bay configuration. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, with a channelled design at the ground floor, although it has an unfortunate modern surface treatment. All windows are sash and case, set within architraves. The third floor is distinguished by consoled and corniced windows, while cill bands are present on the first and second floors. The main entablature has consoled eaves, is coupled at the ends, and features punched windows, along with a mutule cornice and a parapet with raised piers facing St Vincent Street. The building also has end and ridge stacks.

On the Buchanan Street elevation, there is a full basement with a 1-3-1 bay arrangement, where the outer bays project forward. A coupled square-pillared Corinthian porch leads to an arched entrance, flanked by round-headed windows set in recesses. The first-floor windows in the centre bays are single-light, consoled, and corniced, while the ground and first-floor outer bays contain tripartite windows. There are pierced balconies on console brackets and a block frieze on the first floor, along with boundary cast-iron railings atop a low stone wall.

The elevation facing St Vincent Street features a plinth, with round-headed windows in recesses on advanced aprons at the ground floor, and corniced windows on the first floor.
