Description

St George's Tron Parish Church, located at 163 Buchanan Street in Glasgow, was designed by William Stark in 1807. This classical church features a polished ashlar exterior and has a rectangular plan with an eastern main entrance and a Baroque steeple.

The eastern vestibule section, which faces Buchanan Street, has three bays and is distinguished by four giant, semi-engaged Doric columns and a continuous plinth. The central entrance is consoled and corniced, flanked by similar windows, with a keyblocked lunette above. Rectangular stairlights are located on either side, and there is an eaves cornice along with a balustraded parapet in the outer bays. The north and south returns each have a single bay with altered consoled, corniced entrances featuring fanlights and a recessed, arched keyblocked window above. The side elevations are made of droved ashlar and are slightly recessed, with basement and margin-glazed windows at the ground and gallery levels.

The steeple is three stages high, with the first stage featuring a balustraded parapet and giant square angle pilasters. It has arched belfry openings with louvres and a plain entablature. The second stage also has a balustraded parapet, with four octagonal angle piers topped by obelisks, flanking a slender upper stage that includes arched louvred belfry openings and a plain entablature. The third stage has scrolled angle supports and a clock on each face, with a circular dwarf Doric colonnade surmounted by an obelisk.

The rear elevation consists of four bays, with the outer bays being blind. It features a simple gable pediment with a stack and two tall, narrow, round-headed windows, along with a low wing projecting from the central bays.

Inside, the church is galleried with slim cast-iron columns and has a flat ceiling with a shallow, transverse barrel vault beneath the gallery. A circular marble pulpit is also present.
