Description

91, 93, 95 West George Street is a seven-storey commercial building located on a corner site in Glasgow, designed by Frank Burnet and Boston between 1911 and 1913. The building features five main bays along West George Street and three bays along West Nile Street. It is constructed of polished ashlar with a granite plinth and an entrance surround at 91 West George Street, as well as a window in the first bay from the north on West Nile Street.

The southern bay on West Nile Street has a modern shop front, and there is a modern entrance at 93 West George Street. Most of the windows are sash and case, set within architraves, with five-pane glazing and three-pane upper sashes. The ground floor has arched windows with keyblocked timber mullions, and the outer bays of the corner section feature architraved and corniced windows.

The canted corner bay rises from the first to the seventh floor and includes sculpted reliefs between corbels. The canted bay is located in the west bay on West George Street and in the fifth and sixth bays from the north on West Nile Street, with the second to fifth floor centre lights linked in architraves and decorated at the second and fifth floors. There are consoled cornices at the fifth floor, and all canted bays have dentil cornices at the corbelled eaves.

The inner bay has stylised architraves with scroll corbels on the second floor, along with moulded cills and sculpted escutcheons below the canted bays. The seventh floor windows are panelled between the lights, and there are sculpted reliefs in the outer bays, along with a cill band at the seventh floor. The building features symmetrical corner stacks on horizontal sculpted corbels that rise from the first to the seventh storey, topped with a dentil cornice.
