Description

The National Commercial Bank, located at 47 St Vincent Street in Glasgow, is a symmetrical commercial building designed by J M Dick Peddie between 1898 and 1900. It stands five storeys tall and features a layout of seven by seven bays, showcasing classical architecture with baroque detailing. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, with rusticated stonework at the ground and first floors.

The main entrance is situated in the central bay facing St Vincent Street, accessed through an arched portal that extends through both the ground and first floors. This entrance is framed by giant paired Ionic pilasters and topped with a sculpted pediment. On either side of the entrance, there are windows encased in Gibbs surrounds, and a continuous cornice runs above the first floor.

The outer bays of the building are wider and are framed by paired giant Corinthian engaged columns on the second and third floors, with decorative consoles on the fourth floor. Each floor features tripartite windows, with the central lights designed as windows in the inner bays.

In the inner bays, the second-floor windows are adorned with Ionic aedicules and curving cornices that form a base for the balustrade above, which sits atop pilastered and corniced windows on the third floor. The fourth-floor windows have moulded architraves, and there is a bracketted cornice and balustrade above them. The Buchanan Street elevation is similarly detailed, except for the ground floor, which features shop fronts that were formed in 1985, including a central arched doorpiece with the inscribed scroll "National Bank Chambers."

Inside, the bank features a square banking hall with marble walls, three bays of coupled Ionic columns with swag capitals, a glazed coffered ceiling, and a glass dome.
