Description
No. 17 Northgate is a mid to late 19th-century classical stone corner building that stands three storeys tall. It features eight windows, with an additional four on the northern return in Crossley Street and one at the rounded corner. The ground floor contains shops that retain their original cornice and some painted pilasters. The first-floor windows are set beneath semi-circular arches with enriched tympana. A bracketed crowning cornice tops the slated roof. The design of No. 17 matches that of Nos. 25 to 33 on the north side of Crossley Street. Together, Nos. 17 to 33 (odd), No. 12, Nos. 18 to 22 (even), along with all the listed buildings in Crossley Street, No. 2 Wade Street, and No. 1 (with the south extension of the White Swan Hotel), the White Swan Hotel itself, Princess Buildings, Princess Street, and No. 2 Crown Street, form an important group.
