Description
33 Northgate is a mid to late 19th-century classical stone corner building that stands three storeys tall. It features eight or nine windows along with four additional windows on the south side facing Crossley Street and one window on the rounded corner. The ground storey is distinguished by enriched, rusticated pilasters and two arched doorways at the centre, which now house modern shops. The first-floor windows are set beneath semi-circular arches, adorned with enriched tympana and additional decoration on the paired central windows. A bracketed cornice crowns the building, which has a slated roof. The north side of the building is exposed. Its design is consistent with the buildings at Nos 25 to 33 on the south side of Crossley Street. This building, along with Nos 17 to 33 (odd), No 12, Nos 18 to 22 (even), and all the listed buildings in Crossley Street, No 2 Wade Street, and No 1 (with the south extension of the White Swan Hotel), the White Swan Hotel, Princess Buildings, Princess Street, and No 2 Crown Street, forms an important group.
