Description
South Shields Farmhouse and attached barn is a laithe-house dating from around 1820. It features watershot masonry and a stone slate roof, and stands two storeys high with quoins. The barn and the two-cell house occupy equal portions of the structure. A central porch has a coped gable and kneelers, with a doorway that has tie-stone jambs. To the left, there is a semi-circular arched cart entry and a mistal doorway, both with tie-stone jambs. The building includes two bays of flat-faced mullioned windows, with six lights in the lower section and a four-light window above, which has a six-light window over it. There is another doorway to the right, also with tie-stone jambs. The gables are coped with kneelers, and there is a single stack at the ridge. The rear features five-light and seven-light windows on the ground floor, along with a cart entry that has a monolithic lintel. Partly sunk into the ground is a cellar with a giant stone slate roof. The farmhouse is located at the edge of cultivation, just before the moorland begins.
