Description
Stones Farmhouse and the attached barn, dated 1743 with an added house from the early 19th century, are constructed from large hammer-dressed stone and feature a stone slate roof, although half of the barn roof is covered with asbestos. The farmhouse is two storeys high, with the south front displaying quoins, a weathered plinth, and a chamfered doorway with monolithic jambs. Above the doorway is a first-floor taking-in door. There is a double chamfered mullioned window with two wide lights, and above it, a window with plain stone surrounds and a two-light chamfered window. The barn, which is at right angles to the house, has a semi-circular cart entry with a finely engraved keystone that bears the date and initials W.G. (for William Greenwood). It features a plinth and two rectangular chamfered ventilators at ground floor level, along with massive quoins at the angle and return wall. Inside the barn arch is a portal with semi-circular arch-headed doorways that have chamfered surrounds; the left doorway leads to a stable (which has been taken out of the second cell of the house), while the right leads to the mistal. The east front of the barn has similar detailing. The interior of the barn contains two fine stone pointed arches with pointed heads and chamfered surrounds on either side of a central threshing hearth. At the northern end, there is a queen strut truss on a heavily jowled post on a stylobat, while the southern end, which was formerly similar, has been replaced by an iron truss. The farmhouse, which is occupied, is attached to and breaks forward from the barn to the east. It is also two storeys high and consists of two cells. The porch, made of large stones, has a low gable with decorative barge boards. On either side of the porch are broad flat-faced mullioned windows with projecting sills, featuring four lights and two-light sash windows above. The gables are coped and topped with three tall dressed stacks.
