Description
This group of cottages, located at Black Hill Bottom, dates from the mid-18th century to the early 19th century. The buildings are constructed of hammer-dressed stone, with some areas having a watershot finish, and have stone slate roofs. The west front features two sections (‘cells’) with quoins positioned between them. The windows are chamfered mullioned; the original windows were 5-light with a 6-light window above, and one window retains some flat-faced mullions where chamfered mullions have been replaced. A doorway has monolithic jambs; another has a 6-light window above it. The left-hand return wall has two doorways and a 2-light window on the first floor and in the attic. A 3-light window is situated at the junction of a rear wing, set at a right angle, which has flat-faced mullioned windows, including a 4-light window with two smaller lights above on the first floor. One gable has a stack and a doorway with a tie-stone jamb alongside a small single-light window on both floors. The other gable features a doorway with monolithic jambs to the left of a 3-light window with a 2-light window above it in the attic. The rear of the earlier part of the range is built directly on the ground and has a doorway with tie-stone jambs at first-floor level, positioned to the left of a 4-light chamfered mullioned window. Kneelers remain, but the buildings lack coping and chimneys.
