Description
Shaw Bottom Farmhouse and the attached barn is a 19th-century laithe-house that has been converted into a single residence. It is dated "1823" and features hammer-dressed stone with a watershot finish and a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and originally consisted of two separate cottages. Each cottage has a doorway to the left of a 4-light flat-faced mullioned window, with a 5-light window above on the first floor.
The barn, located at the right end of the farmhouse, has a basket-arched entry with an expressed keystone that also bears the date. Above this entry is a simple Venetian window. To the right of the barn is a mistal doorway with tie-stones. The building has coped gables with moulded kneelers; the left gable features a 2-light window at the apex, which lights an attic space used by seasonal workers, specifically Irish haymakers. The right gable includes rectangular ventilators and an owlhole at the apex. There are two stacks along the ridge of the roof. This farmhouse and barn represent a good example of their architectural type.
