Description

Shaw Bottom is a pair of early 19th century single-cell cottages with an added cell around 1830. They are constructed from hammer-dressed stone, with ashlar used for the addition, and feature a stone slate roof. The south front is two storeys high, while the rear rises to three storeys. Each cottage has a doorway with a sill tie and a flat-faced mullioned window with three lights on each floor, consisting of two wide fixed lights on either side of a narrower central light that was originally sashed but has been altered to a casement. The cottages have gutter brackets and quoins, with two stacks at the ridge.

The addition is set back and has a lower roofline. It features a doorway with monolithic jambs to the left of a large sashed window that has a plain stone surround and a projecting sill, retaining 16-paned glazing on both the ground and first floors. This part also has gutter brackets, quoins, and a coped gable with kneelers and a stack. The rear of this cottage aligns with the others and has similar sashed windows on the first and second floors. The ground floor basement includes a six-light flat-faced mullioned window, with the lintel inscribed "DAIRY." Quoins delineate the division with other cottages, which have four bays of two-light flat-faced mullioned windows, some of which are missing their mullions, on the basement and outer bays on the first floor, and all bays on the second floor.
