Description
The buildings at 1, 2, 3 and 4 Lane Head form a row of cottages, originally built as a Township Workhouse in the mid-18th century. A further L-shaped block was added to the south around 1830.
The cottages are constructed from hammer-dressed stone with stone slate and modern slate roofing. The later range has quoins and a three-bay east front featuring five-light, flat-faced mullioned windows on both floors; some mullions have been removed. A doorway with monolithic jambs is located in the first bay. A gable stack is present on the left return wall, and another on the ridge. The right return wall has doorways with tie-stone jambs and square windows positioned either side, with matching windows above on the first floor. The hipped roof joins the earlier cottage at a right angle.
The original cottage has quoins and a doorway with monolithic jambs and a slightly overlapping lintel to the left of a two-light, chamfered mullioned window. The other windows here retain chamfered surrounds, despite the loss of their mullions. This cottage has three ridge stacks. The rear of both ranges retains some flat-faced mullioned windows.
