Description

Higher Murgatshaw Farmhouse is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid 18th century, and an added barn dated 1851 (which is not included in this listing). The building is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and has a stone slate roof. Originally, it had a three-room plan with a baffle entry, but it has since been modified to consist of five divisions.

The first division is an addition featuring quoins and a two-light flat-faced mullioned window to the left of the doorway, which has a tie-stone jamb. The second and third divisions, which were formerly the parlour and housebody, each have a four-light double chamfered mullioned window on the ground floor and chamfered mullioned windows above, with four lights in one and six lights in the other (though it is missing three mullions). To the right of the window in the third bay is the original doorway, which has a flat arched lintel and renewed monolithic jambs with a chamfered surround.

The fourth division includes an 18th-century doorway with tie-stone jambs and a chamfered surround, positioned to the left of two bays of Venetian windows that feature projecting sills, imposts, and an expressed keystone. The first floor has a former six-light flat-faced mullioned window and a two-light window (also missing some mullions). The building has quoins, a coped gable with kneelers, and a stack, along with another stack on the ridge and one on the rear single-storey outshut, which has a five-light flat-faced mullioned window.

Inside, the former housebody features a fine ceiling with reeded spine beams that have elaborate stop chamfers, along with reeded floor joists. There is a corbelled fireplace with a stone shelf from the mid-18th century that retains a decorative cast iron range. The parlour has a similar ceiling.
