Description
Nos 54 and 56 on Old Main Street are a pair of cottages built in 1777. They are constructed from hammer-dressed stone with ashlar quoins and feature a stone slate roof. The cottages are two storeys tall and consist of two single cells that are double-depth. There is a band at the first floor level, and the central pair of doorways is framed by linked surrounds, above which is a date stone. Each floor has three-light flat-faced mullioned windows with slightly recessed mullions, although the windows in the second cell were replaced around 1894. The ground floor of the first cell has been altered in the 19th century to include a shop front with slim pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. Gable stacks are present on the roof. At the rear, the central doorways have interrupted jambs, each with a single-light window above. On either side of these doorways, there are three-light flat-faced mullioned windows on both floors. Notably, the left window on the first floor has had its mullion removed and features a horizontal-sliding sash.
