Description
The Old White Horse is a house that has been converted into a public house. It dates from the mid-17th century, with alterations made in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of rubble that has been brought to course and is whitewashed, topped with a stone slate roof.
It has two storeys and features a three-cell hall-and-crosswing plan. The left wing projects forward and has quoined angles, with a five-light double-chamfered mullioned window with a hoodmould on each floor, along with a doorway to the right that also has a hoodmould. The gable is coped and includes kneelers and finials at the eaves and apex. The hall range has four altered three-light windows on the ground floor, while the first floor retains two three-light double-chamfered mullioned windows and has a lateral stack positioned between them. The right gable stack is also coped with kneelers and finials. On the left-hand return of the wing, there is a two-light window with a hoodmould on the ground floor and an 18th-century window with an architrave and block keystone on the first floor; the other windows are from the 20th century. There are two stacks, one on the gable and another elsewhere.
Inside, the crosswing features a chamfered spine beam with ogee stops, an oak-panelled dado dating from around 1720, and an overmantel with a pulvinated frieze. There are two painted heraldic coats-of-arms, which are much faded, but one appears to be surmounted by the Ferrand Crest, depicting a cubit arm wielding a battle axe. The doorway to this room has a stone-carved lintel, and there are other chamfered beams throughout.
